A few people have mentioned how they're upset I put the tutorials in storage, so I'm writing this journal to explain why.

  • Now that I've graduated I've moved home with mum and I no longer get a student loan or bursary from the government. The dolls are my only source of income, they're going so well I fully intend to register as a small business and really get going with them.
  • By making the tutorial I helped a lot of people learn how to make the dolls and a lot of them found them so much fun and so profitable that they've opened their own commissions. I'm so glad and proud that I was the one who helped them start off and I'm friends with many of them, but those who make and sell art dolls are in competition with me. I cannot afford to lose commissioners! I try very hard to make my dolls of the highest quality, to make sure customer relations are the best they can be, to make sure good feedback is provided for future commissioners and customers, to raise my seller profile on Etsy etc etc, so handing out my secrets completely voids all that hard work.
  • 90% of people do not link back or mention that it was my tutorial which helped. The whole point of the tutorial was to HELP people like us, small crafters interested and passionate in a craft, LEARN how to make these things. If people don't share that they learnt through my tutorial then it defeats the purpose completely!
  • While I get many, many comments thanking me for my help there are one or two people who ruin it by keeping the tutorial to themselves and it is these few selfish people who have encouraged the process of it being removed.
  • If I managed to gather all that information and learnt how to do it myself without a tutorial to help me then you can too! Everything you need to know is on the internet, I haven't been to any special courses or had any teachers show me how to do this, I have self-taught myself using internet resources. I can point you in the right direction for specific things if you want, though, to help you on your way without giving it to you on a silver platter.
  • I felt I was undercutting the artists who already make and sell art dolls, the ones who established themselves before me and all the artists after me. They have worked equally if not harder than me, and it was unfair for me to create competition for THEM so easily.
  • This is very important: Those of you who may have saved or printed the tutorial, please keep it to yourself. All the reasons I listed above for taking the tutorial down apply to you too, please don't undermine me and other artists by giving away secrets. It is not a selfish thing to ask this, think of how exclusive that information you have is. The dolls you make will in turn gain value due to their mysterious and technical creation.

It sounds harsh but things have changed. The dolls aren't just a fun pastime for me anymore, I fully intend to live off them! I'm sure you'll all understand.

Equally PosableArtDolls is a bit of a thorn in my side when it comes to my business plan. One of the questions I have to answer is: 'How do your customers learn about your competition?' So when I say "I made a club to show them", it sounds pretty stupid. But I'm loathe to cut you all off completely like that, I love that little group and I think it really brings the fantasy art doll community together a bit. To be honest I think we're all supporting each other in a way, and a bit of competition is healthy, so I won't be deleting the group.

SO... There it is. I'm sorry this journal wasn't more cheerful!

It's sad that you have taken them down. I just want to make maybe one or two for me, and I'm finding it really damn hard to get any quality information on how to do it, as the best doll makers either get so many comments they ignore them, or people don't want to help for business reasons. It's totally a legitimate reason, of course, it's still a bit sad though :( I know you say that you found how to do it, but I've looked all over on the internet and there's no coherent step by step process, people seem to assume you know what they're talking about when they talk about what kind of wire to use as armature and I have no clue paha.

Is there no chance I could ask to see the tutorial privately, and not share it with anyone?

Thank you for your time :)
